How does a solar water heater work?

Active solar water heaters: A pump circulates hot water from the solar collectors, or absorbers, to your home using active solar water heaters. These are commonly used in colder climates since the water is stored in a tank kept indoors to avoid freezing.

Active solar water heaters can be classified into two types:

• Water is heated directly in collectors and then supplied to your faucets and showerheads passive direct systems. Metal or glass tubes are commonly used as solar collectors.
• A heat transfer fluid, such as propylene glycol, is heated within the solar collectors and then transferred to the water supply via a heat exchanger in a closed loop in an active indirect system. While the transfer fluid circles the system, some heat is lost.

Passive solar water heaters: To transfer hot water, passive solar water heaters do not utilize circulating pumps. Instead, they use convection to circulate water, in which hotter water rises to the surface and cold water sinks. Because they don't require extra equipment to pump the water, passive solar water systems are usually less expensive than active ones.

Passive solar water heaters are divided into two groups:

• Integral collector solar water heaters use a transparent storage tank to enable the sun to heat the water. The tank's water subsequently enters the plumbing system. These are most effective in locations where the temperature rarely drops below freezing. They're also great for families who have a lot of hot water during the day and evening.
• To heat tiny batches of water on your roof, passive thermosiphon systems use metal flat plate collectors. When you turn on your hot water taps, the hot water in the batch collector at the top of your roof rushes down to your faucets. These typically hold 40 gallons of water.

A tank less heater, either gas or electric, is commonly used as a backup energy source in passive systems.
